Violet M. Tanner, 95, of Alton, passed away at 8:55 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2015, at Alton Nursing & Rehab.
She was born in St. Louis on Dec. 15, 1919, the daughter of the late Frank and Lena Mae (Schneider) Gaither.
On Feb. 21, 1947, she married Hubert Tanner.
Violet was a homemaker who loved taking care of her children and grandchildren while always being there for everyone. She enjoyed flowers and bird-watching. Violet was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church until combined with St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
She is survived by one son, James Tanner of Alton; three daughters, Nancy Cox of Alton, Susan (Richard) Derleth of Highland and Janie (David) McCann of Fosterburg; 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert; two sons, Raymond and Richard Lowe; one sister, Sophie Gaither; and two brothers, Elmer and George Gaither.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, 2015, at Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton.
Funeral service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, 2015, at Staten-Fine Funeral Home.
Burial will follow at Upper Alton Cemetery at a later date.
