Virginia Unfried-Jones, 91, of Granite City, passed away at 1:51 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014, at her home.
She was born June 15, 1923, in East St. Louis, the daughter of the late John and Gertrude (Naumann) Fleming. She married Lawrence “Clemie” Unfried in 1945 and he passed away Feb. 10, 1992. She later married Earl James Jones in 1998 and he passed away on July 29, 2011.
She retired from St. Elizabeth Hospital in 1988 after 15 years of service as a telephone operator and supervisor. She was a faithful member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Granite City. She enjoyed her days of square dancing and was a member of Boots and Slippers and the Barnswarmers. She enjoyed playing cards and pinochle and will be remembered for the love and special times spent with her family and friends.
She is survived by four children and their spouses, Larry and Barbara Unfried of Granite City, Jeanine Unfried of Granite City, Michael and Kim Unfried of Edwardsville and Elizabeth Sigite of Granite City; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; other extended family and friends.
In addition to her husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, John Fleming; and an infant brother, Bernard Fleming.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2014, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City, with a prayer service at 5 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2014, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 2606 Washington Ave. in Granite City, with Father Jeff Holtman as celebrant. Burial will be at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville. Memorials may be made as Masses or to Gateway Hospice and may be accepted at the funeral home, www.irwinchapel.com.
