William A. Tegel, 85, of Granite City, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2015, at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City surrounded by his family.
He was born on July 2, 1930, in St. Louis, a son of the late Joseph and Marie (Thomas) Tegel.
William gave 38 years to Granite City Steel as a metallurgist and proudly served his country in the U.S. Marines in the Korean War. He enjoyed taking care of his garden and was known for being woodworking craftsman. In his free time, he liked to BBQ and make sausage and bread. Most of all, he loved to spend time with his family. He will be remembered for his kind heart and all the special times they shared together.
He is survived by and will be missed by his wife, Stella (Hickam) Tegel, whom he married on Oct. 2, 1954; his daughter, Paula and (William) Smith of Granite City; his sons, Tim Tegel of Granite City, Larry and (Barb) Tegel of Glen Carbon, and Dan Tegel of Wildwood, Mo.; grandchildren, Ben, Steve, Cara, Lauren, Rob, Nick, Katelynn, Kaleb and Alexandria; great-grandchildren, Saffron, Meg and Mason; and brother, Bob Tegel.
In addition to his parents, William was preceded in death by his brother, Pete Tegel.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, 2015, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City. In celebration of his life, services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015, at the funeral home with Fr. Chris Comerford officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon with military rites. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association.
