William E. Weller Jr., 90, of Granite City, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2014, at Meridian Village in Glen Carbon.
He was born Sept. 13, 1924, in St. Louis, a son to the late William E. and Flora (Mesnick) Weller Sr.
William was a longtime inspector at Conrail and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of Niedringhaus United Methodist Church, member of the New Douglas Masonic Lodge, a Shriner, a Master Mason and the past Grand Master of the New Douglas Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by and will be missed by his daughters, Frances Weller-Caughlan and (the Rev. Brian Caughlan) of Springfield, Judy and (Bob) Tatum of Granite City; his sons, Robert Weller of East Alton, Gerald Weller of Sparta, Steve Weller of Pontoon Beach; grandchildren, Scotty and (Tammy) Weller, Daniel Weller, Deanna Tatum, Tracy and (Jon) Hutchins, Christine Weller, Melissa Weller, Jerri Michelle Weller Rueter and (Jeremy Rueter), Rebecca and (Josh) Powell; and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Lou (Woodward) Weller, whom he married on Nov. 9, 1946; granddaughter, Alexandria Marie Weller; and a brother, Russell O. Weller.
In celebration of William’s life, a memorial gathering will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 5, 2014, with Pastor Brian Caughlan officiating at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City. Burial will follow at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery with full military rites. Memorials are suggested to Southern Illinois Hospice or the Granite City A.P.A.
