William Richard Stamper, 84, of Roxana, died at 6:45 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014 at Eden Village Care Center in Glen Carbon.
He was born Sept. 7, 1930, in Alton, the son of the late John William and Verna Mae (Winslade) Stamper.
Stamper was a U.S. Air Force Korean war veteran and a member of the Alton VFW Post No. 1308 and Wood River Moose No. 1349. After his military service, he worked for Laclede Steel, retiring in 1991 as an Oil Temp Furnace Operator after 41 ½ years of service.
He is survived by a daughter, Joyce (Randy) Brueggeman of East Alton; a son, Kenneth (Martha) Stamper of Roxana; a daughter-in-law, Cheryl Stamper of Washington state; six grandchildren, Amy (Pat) Friedel, Chris (Houda) Stamper, Kyle (Emily) Brueggeman, Jared (Joy) Brueggeman, Thomas (Amber) Stamper and Jacob Stamper; eight great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Louis Stamper of Alton and Roy Robert Stamper of Augusta, Ga.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Michael Stamper.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of services at noon Saturday, Oct. 11, at Paynic Home for Funerals with the Rev. Daryl Fansler officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens with military honors by VFW Post No. 1308.
