Rained out Monday night, the Metro East Bears will go back to baseball business on Tuesday.
The 21-6 Bears are scheduled to play host Highland in a 7:30 District 22 playoff game at Hopkins Field in Moore Park. Metro East, the top seed in the seven-team district, has already defeated Highland twice this season.
If the Bears do it a third time, they will welcome Fairview Heights at 7:30 Wednesday. Fairview Heights defeated Belleville, 2-1, on Monday, handing the Hilgards their first loss in the double-elimination tournament.
In other tourney action, Collinsville eliminated Troy.
Metro East can automatically advance to next week’s Fifth Division play at New Baden if the Bears can win Tuesday and Wednesday. The first- and second-place teams from the district playoffs qualify for the Fifth Division tournament.
The Fifth Division winner moves on to the state tourney at Arlington Heights.
Jerseyville, meanwhile, clinched the District 20 championship Monday night by defeating visiting Calhoun, 12-2. Post 492 also defeated Calhoun, 15-5, on Sunday in the best two-of-three series.
Both teams will participate in the Third Division tourney, set to start Monday, July 21, in Jerseyville. Calhoun will play at noon the first day and Jerseyville is scheduled to go at 3 p.m. in the five-team division.
Michael Sheldon pitched a five-hitter for 12-5 Jerseyville and five Post 492 players supplied two hits apiece in the rout. Calhoun led 2-0, but Jerseyville responded with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. A five-run seventh capped the victory.
In Sunday’s game, Crick Kimble of Jerseyville contributed four hits, including three doubles, and drove in six runs. Winning pitcher Drake Kanallakan backed his cause with a pair of doubles.
