CARLINVILLE — The top 54 boys’ and girls’ basketball seniors from South Central Illinois will be playing in the 14th annual Carlinville Rotary Club/Country Financial All-Star Basketball Classic Sunday, March 20, at Carlinville High School.
A total of 23 high schools will be represented in the event, which includes 27 girls and 27 boys. The event is sponsored by Country Financial representatives in Macoupin, Montgomery, Greene and Jersey counties.
Trace Gentry of Roxana and Blake Marks of East Alton-Wood River are among the players on the West boys’ team.
Other players on the West team are: Joe Bates and Xavier Dunlap of Carlinville; Colin Tieman, Eli Fox and Evan Price of Gillespie; Zac Ridenhour and Drake Kanallakan of Jersey Community; Zack Seymour of Southwestern; Luke Gillingham and Cole Brannan of Carrollton; Chase Bushnell of North Greene; plus Austin Bishop and Connor Shade of Greenfield/Northwestern. Gillespie’s Casey Sholtis will coach the West All-Stars.
The East boys’ squad includes: Brennan White and Cooper Etter of North Mac; Corey Scroggins and Austin Gusewelle of Staunton; Garrett Gillette and Jordan Hampton of Pawnee; Conner Simmons, Cooper Scharf and Josh Franke of Litchfield; Bryan Graham and A.J. Thomas of Lincolnwood; and David Holden of Greenville. Drew Logan of Litchfield will coach the East All-Stars.
Players on the West girls’ squad are: Marley Schmidt of Carlinville; Darci Brannan, Destyne Powell and Makendra Jennings of North Greene; Karlie Green, Maddy Greeling, Erin Laubscher and Kelsey Rhoades of Southwestern; Lydia Wall and Sydney Wyatt of South County; Bailey Jarman and Jessica Robbins of Gillespie; and Elizabeth Hall of Greenfield/Northwestern. Southwestern’s Steve Wooley will coach the West All-Stars.
Players on the East girls’ team are: Emma Brown of Auburn; Lindsey Storm, Maddy Reck and Carly Cameron of Hillsboro; Anna Thomack, Abby Frerichs and Helen Vargo of Litchfield/Lincolnwood; Karmyn Cox, Autumn Boliard and Abbi Ruppert of Nokomis; Brianna Wade, Briana VanKleef and Madison Funneman of Greenville; and Reaghan Vaughn of Pana. Rob Corso of Litchfield/Lincolnwood will coach the East All-Stars.
Each game will be played in four 10-minute quarters. The Country Financial 3-point shootout for the girls will begin at 4 p.m., followed by the girls’ All-Star game at 4:30 p.m.
The Country Financial 3-point shootout for the boys will be held between games, starting at 6:15 p.m., with the boys’ All-Star game to follow at 6:45 p.m. A slam dunk contest will be held at halftime of the boys’ game.
At halftime of each game, the Carlinville Rotary Club will present the Coach of the Year awards. An MVP award will also be given following each game.
Proceeds from the day’s events will go to the Carlinville Rotary Club to help with community projects throughout the year. Admission to the Carlinville Rotary All-Star Basketball Classic is $6. Children 10 and under are admitted free.
In the girls’ game last year, the West won 46-37 as MVP Maddy Sheraka of Roxana scored 13 points, with 3 treys, to lead the West All-Stars. Sheraka also won the Country Financial 3-point contest, beating Ashlyn Ringhausen of Southwestern in a shootoff after both players hit 10 of 15 shots during the opening round.
The win by the West girls ended a 4-game winning streak by the East. The East still leads the overall series 8-4.
In the boys’ game last year, the West outlasted the East 107-104 in overtime as Greenfield/Northwestern’s Austin Plogger drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer in OT. Plogger led the West with 22 points including 6 treys and was named the game’s MVP. Plogger had 7 points in OT including the game-winner.
The West won their fourth in a row and leads the all-time series 10-3.
