Class 3A Regional at Granite City
Alton’s Phyllip DeLoach, a junior, grappled his way to a second straight regional title Saturday in Granite City.
At 138 pounds he was the only Redbird to make claim to a title, moving his record to 41-1 with a 13-6 decision over Belleville West’s Nathan Smalling in the championship match.
“We had a pretty rough time out there today,” Alton coach Eric Roberson said. “Phyllip (DeLoach) has put a lot of hard work in this year and it paid off, but as a team we struggled.”
The Redbirds also advanced juniors Nicholas DeLoach, Darian Pierson and Qiante Wagner to the sectional next weekend in Normal. Nicholas DeLoach (19-2) was runner-up at 145, Pierson (34-10) was runner-up at heavyweight and Wagner (41-3) placed third at 152.
Edwardsville took its third consecutive regional championship Saturday, qualifying eight wrestlers to the sectional.
Behind Edwardsville’s eight qualifiers, West and Granite each advanced six and Quincy moved on five.
The DeLoach brothers and Wagner each took No. 1 seeds to the regional; however, only one claimed a title. The Redbirds claimed fifth place overall.
