Softball: Macy Thurston, Jersey Community High School
Thurston, a senior, did it all for the Panthers last week as they scored key victories over Southwestern and Alton.
In their 9-8 home victory over Southwestern, Thurston doubled home the tying run in the seventh and then scored the winner. She was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and an RBI.
The next day, Thurston was at it again, this time against Alton. She pitched three scoreless innings as the Panthers prevailed 9-0 to raise their record to 3-1 heading into this week.
Thurston said she wants to finish with a flourish during her final season of prep competition. She also excels in basketball and volleyball and will attend Lewis and Clark Community College in Godfrey this fall. She will play softball and compete in volleyball for the Trailblazers.
Baseball: Matt Hopkins, Alton High School
The junior slugger continued his hard hitting as the Redbirds won four of five games the past week to improve to 6-2.
Hopkins, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound outfielder, played a big part in Alton wins over Jersey, Moline, Cahokia and enabled the Redbirds to split a doubleheader with host Civic Memorial.
Overall, he’s batting a team-best .517, thanks to 15 hits in 29 at-bats. Hopkins also has scored 12 runs. He has two doubles, eight RBIs and a .600 on-base percentage.
Hopkins had two RBIs and pitched three innings in the second-game win against CM. He has also had productive outings against Cahokia and Murphysboro. The Redbirds were scheduled to open Southwestern Conference play against Belleville East and Edwardsville this week.
