Female Athlete of the Week: Anna Whitaker of Roxana High School, Soccer
When the Roxana Shells girls’ soccer team took on the Jersey Panthers on March 31, senior Anna Whitaker scored the first hat trick of her prep career. Her three goals helped the Shells win 6-2 at the Oiler Soccer Classic in Wood River, but her hot streak didn’t continue through the week because inclement weather canceling the rest of the week’s games.
But the Shells’ one game at the soccer classic was a big one for Whitaker. She scored her first goal of the game off a corner kick from teammate Claire Bollinger with a header into the top corner of the net, scoring her next two goals off assists from Bollinger again.
Male Athlete of the Week: Spencer Heineman of Southwestern High School, Baseball
The junior pitcher was at his best last Saturday as the Piasa Birds outlasted Jacksonville Routt, 1-0, in a 10-inning thriller.
Heineman did his part in pitching a complete game, allowing just two hits, striking out nine and walking one. Teammate Cody Roberts went 2-for-43 and drove in the game’s lone run in the 10th.
Thus far this spring. Heineman has posted a 3-1 record and 0.97 ERA for the 3-3 Piasa Birds. He also owns wins over Columbia (3-2) and Jersey (4-2) and has 21 strikeouts in 29 innings.
The Piasa Birds were expected to be busy the past week with scheduled games against North Greene, Staunton, Calhoun and Quincy Notre Dame. The one with Staunton opens South Central Conference play for them.
