Sarah Fischer | Soccer
Fischer, a senior for the Alton High School girls’ soccer team, highlighted the Redbirds’ 2-0 win over visiting Jacksonville on April 11 at Gordon Moore Park.
Fischer scored both goals in the win for the Birds, marking the first time in her career she had posted a multi-goal game.
“I’m normally more of a defensive player,” Fischer said after the win on April 11.
She drilled home a goal off a corner kick for her first goal, emerging from a scrum in front of the net to score in the first half.
Her second tally came late in the game as she accepted a pass from teammate Lexi Green and pounded it into the net.
“She has the ability to produce like that,” Redbirds’ coach Laura Ridolfi said of Fischer. “She can pop in goals when we need her to do that.”
Matt Hopkins | Baseball
Alton’s Hopkins, a senior for the baseball program, broke out of a slump on April 10 when the Redbirds bested Southwestern Conference rival Collinsville 6-2.
The left-handed hitting outfielder bound for the Air Force went 2 for 4 with three RBIs in the win. He stroked a two-run single in a five-run third inning and tacked on another RBI on a single in the fifth.
“He’s one of our key guys and we want him to continue to do what he did today,” AHS head coach Todd Haug said following the win.
Hopkins came through again on April 14, supplying the offense with an RBI triple in a 1-0 SWC victory over Belleville West at home.
Through Wednesday, Hopkins was hitting .219 with 11 runs scored and eight RBIs.
