Male Athlete of the Week, Christian Freeman of Alton, Tennis
It was Freeman leading the way for the Redbirds in the Peoria Richwoods Green and White Tennis Invitational this past weekend.
He won at No. 2 singles to help the Redbirds claim the team title. Alton totaled 35 points to shade runner-up Richwoods, which had 31 points. Morton took third with 30 points in the eight-team field.
Freeman, a team captain and four-year starter, lifted his overall record to 13-4 with his championship at Peoria. He defeated Jon Asherman of Quincy, 6-2, 7-5 for his singles title.
Earlier this season, Freeman was 3-1 at the Triad Duals and 4-1 at the Edwardsville Duals.
"Christian is one of the hardest-working players on the team," Alton coach Jesse Macias said. "He hustles on every point and is a great role model for the younger players."
Alton played host to Southwestern Conference rival Edwardsville on Wednesday. The Redbirds will hold their Doubles Invite on Saturday. It’s scheduled to start at 8 a.m.
Female Athlete of the Week, Victoria Beachum of East Alton-Wood River, Softball
Beachum, a junior left-hander, continued her solid pitching as the improving Oilers prevailed in a pair of games last week.
She pitched a no-hitter and fanned 11 in a 5-0 victory over Roxana and then struck out 17 as East Alton-Wood River edged Mascoutah, 3-2. Beachum fashioned a one-hitter against the Indians and worked around six errors.
Beachum, also hitting .375, has recorded 88 strikeouts in 54 innings and registered nine complete games thus far. The SIUE-bound Beachum is 4-7 with a 3.50 ERA.
The Oilers have four games scheduled this week, including a home one with Alton on Wednesday. They will also entertain Civic Memorial on April 22.
