Kain Henson | Boys’ Tennis
Henson is a senior for the Alton High boys’ tennis program and has provided much leadership for the Redbirds this season.
He rounded out a busy week for Alton tennis by teaming up with fellow senior Drew Hays on April 18 to win the No. 1 doubles flight of the Alton Invitational, leading the Birds to their third consecutive Alton Invite team title.
Henson and Hays knocked off top-seeded Nick Pals and Andy Mersman of Teutopolis 4-6, 6-3, 12-10 to garner bragging rights at No. 1 doubles. The duo fought off three match points in the win.
On April 15, Henson teamed with Jackson Scheiter of the Birds in Edwardsville and pushed EHS duo Jonathan Koons and Joe Mezo, but lost 7-5, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles.
Henson was a state qualifier for the Birds in doubles a year ago.
Drew Hays | Boys’ Tennis
Alton senior Drew Hays was key in the Redbirds’ defense of the Alton Invite on April 18.
Hays teamed with fellow senior Kain Henson to nab the No. 1 doubles title, leading to Alton’s third straight Alton Invite team title.
Henson and Hays faced match point and denied it three times.
“You always like to win your own tournament,” Hays said on April 18 following the Birds’ tournament title. “And especially with good teams like Althoff and Teutopolis. It’s big for the town.”
It capped a busy week for Hays, who posted a victory at No. 2 singles against Southwestern Conference opponent Collinsville at AHS on April 13. He then paired up with Carl Stradal at No. 2 doubles to battle Edwardsville’s Alex Gray and Kyle Carlson on April 15, ultimately losing 6-3, 6-3 on the road in conference action.
