Male Athlete of the Week: Brett Beckham of Civic Memorial, Baseball
The senior left-hander is a big reason why the Eagles figure to contend for the Mississippi Valley Conference title.
Beckham, a 5-foot-8, 165-pounder, was at his finest last Friday as Civic Memorial defeated Jersey, 3-1, in a league game. Thanks to Beckham’s three-hitter, CM improved to 11-4 overall and 2-0 in the MVC.
He’s 4-1 with a 3.80 ERA on the mound thus far and is contributing to the Eagles’ offense as an outfielder. Beckham was hitting .383 with a team-leading 16 RBIs through 15 games.
Female Athlete of the Week, Haley Longo of Alton, Softball
The senior infielder continued her torrid hitting as the Redbirds extended their winning ways.
The right-handed-hitting Longo raised her batting average to a team-best .548, one of the top marks in the St. Louis area. She has 23 hits in 42 at-bats, has driven in 11 runs and scored 22 times thus far.
The 9-4 Redbirds routed East St. Louis, 16-1, in a Southwestern Conference game and capped the weekend with a doubleheader sweep at Carrollton. They defeated Pawnee, 11-1, and Carrollton, 5-1.
Longo had a big day at Carrollton. She was 5-for-7 with a double and two triples in the two games.
