Drew Sobol | Wrestling
A sophomore at East Alton-Wood River High School, Sobol is having a fantastic season for the Oiler wrestling team.
On Feb. 7 at the Class 1A Roxana Regional, Sobol secured the second regional championship of his career. He won both of his matches at regionals by pinning his opponents. Sobol hasn’t allowed a point against him on the mat since the Mascoutah Tournament on Dec. 20.
At regionals, Sobol pinned Litchfield’s Collin Davidson in 2:42 despite Davidson being ranked fifth in the state at 106 pounds, while Sobol is eighth.
“Last time he wrestled Davidson, he won by just two points,” EA-WR head coach Dave Sobol said following the Roxana Regional. “Today he was able to pin Davidson and he’s actually ranked higher than Drew.”
Maddy Sheraka | Girls’ Basketball
Sheraka, a senior for the Roxana Shells, etched her name in the annals of school history on Feb. 5 at Larry Milazzo Memorial Gymnasium.
At the 5:52 mark of the second quarter against visiting Dupo, Sheraka sank a free throw to become the all-time leading scorer in girls’ basketball at Roxana. She surpassed 1996 grad Angela Payne, who owned the record with 1,286 points.
Sheraka is averaging more than 18 points per game for the Shells, which entered the postseason this week.
“I was happy to be able to do it tonight,” Sheraka said after setting the new benchmark on Senior Night at Roxana. “That was the most pressured 1-and-1 I’ve had to shoot in my whole entire life.”
