Dalton Brito | Wrestling
Brito, a senior for the Roxana Shells, has been dealing with an elbow injury he sustained away from the wrestling mat. On Saturday at the Class 1A Vandalia Sectional, Brito seemed to put the injury behind him.
After taking an injury default in the Roxana Regional finals to Althoff's Jevon Hey, Brito logged a 4-3 decision over Hey in the sectional finals to nab a sectional crown at 126 pounds.
The sectional championship earned Brito a spot at the Class 1A state tournament that began Thursday and ends Saturday at Champaign's State Farm Center. It marks the third time in three seasons at Roxana that Brito has qualified for state. He's still in search of his first state medal. He entered the state tournament with a 37-5 record.
Cole Ford | Ice Hockey
Ford, a senior defenseman on the East Alton-Wood River ice hockey squad, has been a solid contributor for the Oilers this season. Ford led EA-WR with 29 points during the regular season, netting 10 goals to go with 19 assists.
It was Ford's heroics in the final minute of the MVCHA 1A West Division semifinals that were the biggest moment of his season, though.
With just 39.3 seconds remaining against Jerseyville in Game 2 of the best-of-three series on Feb. 12, Ford buried a goal on assists from Seth Chester and Alec Revelle to propel the Oilers past the Panthers 5-4. The win eliminated Jerseyville and sent EA-WR into the 1A West finals vs. Bethalto, which began Tuesday.
Ford's goal came on the heels of a goal being waved off for the Oilers, too.
