Kaylee Eaton | Girls’ Basketball
Eaton, just a freshman at Civic Memorial High School, made her presence felt in the Class 3A Jersey Regional finals against Highland on Feb. 19.
Eaton poured in 16 points, including shooting four of five from beyond the arc to complement teammate and leading scorer Allie Troeckler’s 23 points. Eaton’s performance was key in CM’s 63-56 win over the Bulldogs, securing the regional championship.
It was the first time in three tries in ‘14-15 that the Eagles had beaten Highland. The win catapulted CM into the Highland Sectional this week.
The freshman Eaton is averaging 5.5 points per game off the bench for the Eagles this season.
Phyllip DeLoach | Wrestling
An Alton senior star wrestler, Phyllip DeLoach secured the first state medal of his career on Feb. 21 at the Class 3A individual state wrestling tournament. Joining his twin brother Nicholas, the standout grapplers became the first multiple state medalists from the same season in AHS history. Both Phyllip (145) and Nicholas (152) earned fourth-place medals.
Phyllip suffered a painful hamstring injury in his semifinal loss in the championship bracket on Feb. 20. He returned with a heavily wrapped leg and noticeable limp on Feb. 21 to log a 2-1 decision over Chicago Marist’s Nick Gasbarro to reach the third-place bout, where he lost 3-2 in overtime to Belleville West’s Nick Foster. Phyllip completed the season with a 40-2 record.
