Nicholas DeLoach | Wrestling
Nicholas DeLoach, a senior wrestler for the Alton Redbirds, added to his already impressive 2014-15 season on Saturday. DeLoach was named the Outstanding Wrestler at the Geneva Invitational, winning a title at 152 pounds and helping lead the Redbirds to the team title.
DeLoach was ranked No. 7 in the state at 152 pounds with a record of 26-0 at press time. The Geneva Invite crown was the third individual title for DeLoach this season so far. DeLoach defeated Woodstock Marian Central’s Nick Remke 6-5 in overtime to win at Geneva. Remke is ranked No. 1 at 152 in Class 2A and finished third in state a year ago.
He helped guide Alton past Belleville West 35-24 on Jan. 8 in a big Southwestern Conference dual win at AHS, too. It led to a four-way tie atop the SWC.
Alton battled Edwardsville in a showdown between two of those four top teams on Thursday following press time.
Brayton Williams | Wrestling
A senior 152-pound wrestler, Williams is a stout performer on the mat for the Civic Memorial Eagles. Williams picked up his first individual title of 2014-15 at the Murdale Tournament in Carbondale on Saturday.
Dealing with a broken thumb at the start of the season, Williams is rounding into shape for the Eagles now. He was ranked No. 3 in Illinois in Class 2A, according to www.illinoismatmen.com prior to press time. He was third individually at the Mascoutah Invitational earlier in the season.
His individual crown in Carbondale helped lead CM to 11th place as a team. Williams will now look to make noise on Saturday at the East Alton-Wood River Super Duals.
Williams was a state qualifier for CM last season.
