Ryan Hayes | Boys’ Bowling
Hayes, a senior for the Civic Memorial Eagles, stepped up big time at the Herrin Sectional on Saturday.
In his third game of the day, Hayes turned in a flawless effort, rolling a 300. His overall series for the sectional was 1,296, good for best on the CM squad and fourth overall individually.
Hayes’ performance helped propel the Eagles into the state tournament for the first time ever. CM finished fifth with 5,808 pins. The top six teams qualified for the state tournament, which begins today at St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon.
It marks the first state appearance for Hayes also, who was second on the Eagles to teammate Phillip Ramos (1,342) at the Alton Regional on Jan. 17.
Andria Pace | Girls’ Basketball
A junior for the Marquette Catholic Explorers, the 6-foot-1 Pace was an integral part of two wins for the Explorers last week.
Pace poured in a game-high 18 points in a 54-52 Prairie State Conference victory over Metro East Lutheran on Jan. 20 and then netted a game-high 19 points in a 70-49 win over Madison to open the Carrollton Hawks Invitational on Jan. 24.
Free throw sharpshooting spurred Pace’s success, going 10 of 10 from the line vs. MELHS and seven of eight from the charity stripe against Madison.
Pace also tied for the team lead in points with nine during a 52-40 loss to the Roxana Shells on Jan. 22.
Pace and the Explorers continued play in Carrollton on Tuesday vs. top seed Calhoun. That tournament concludes on Saturday.
