Q’iante Wagner | Wrestling
An Alton senior wrestler, Wagner put together a match to remember in the 160-pound finals at the William “Red” Schmitt Holiday Tournament on Dec. 30 in Granite City. Wagner denied Washington’s Randy Meneweather an escape point late in the match and then rode Meneweather out to earn a 2-1 decision and an individual championship.
Meneweather is a defending Class 2A state champion and had won all of his matches in Granite City by pinfall before the finals. Wagner’s dramatic victory over Meneweather earned him the distinction of Outstanding Wrestler at the tournament.
Wagner was a state qualifier a year ago and is ranked fourth in Class 3A in Illinois at 160 pounds.
Alton wrestled Southwestern Conference rival Belleville West in an important league dual on Thursday at home after press time.
