Male Athlete of the Week: Jake Varble of Jersey Community High School, Baseball
Varble, a 6-foot-4 junior and key member of the Jersey High basketball team that won 18 games, is continuing his success this spring.
He’s a shortstop for the Panthers’ baseball team and Varble enabled Jersey High to savor a 3-0 getaway the first week of the season.
Varble had nine hits in 12 at bats for a potent .750 average the opening three games. Four of those nine hits were doubles and Varble also amassed six RBIs.
“He’s tearing the cover off the baseball and making a lot of plays in the infield,” Jersey coach Darren Perdun said.
In addition to his hot hitting and slick fielding, Varble pitched three solid innings of relief against Roxana to log a save.
Female Athlete of the Week: Abby Porter of Marquette Catholic High School, Girls Soccer
Senior goaltender Abby Porter's best days are ahead of her with the Marquette Explorers’ soccer program. Only five games into the season, Porter has yielded three shutout games against Belleville East, Belleville Althoff and Alton High. She has yet to be scored on this season, with the exception of penalty kicks. This 6-foot-1 senior also is a standout basketball player, averaging 12.5 points and eight rebounds this past season.
