Aaron Bonnell | Baseball
A junior catcher for the Alton Redbirds, Bonnell enjoyed a heck of a run beginning Saturday, May 2.
In five games between May 2-7, Bonnell batted .556 (10 for 18) with two doubles, one home run, eight RBIs and five runs scored. His efforts helped the Redbirds go 5-0 in the five games.
The big run by Bonnell raised his season average to .422, good for second overall on the team entering Monday. He was also third with seven doubles and fourth with 21 RBIs.
To boot, he’s been the catcher for a stellar Alton pitching staff on the season. Star senior southpaw Bryan Hudson said about Bonnell after a 5-1 win over Collinsville on May 5 at Gordon Moore Park, “Aaron has been phenomenal. I couldn’t ask for a better catcher.”
Hannah Rexford | Softball
Rexford is just a freshman, but has stepped up in the circle for the Roxana Shells this season.
The Shells went 3-1 in four games from May 4-6, while Rexford went 3-0 in the circle.
Her biggest performance came on May 4 when she twirled a no-hitter against crosstown rival East Alton-Wood River. She struck out seven Oilers on the way to the stellar feat.
Rexford was also in the circle on May 6 to help lead the Shells past the talented Marquette Catholic Explorers 12-6. She went the distance in that game, fanning four and walking two while surrendering eight hits.
On the season Rexford was 11-8 with a 1.18 ERA and 164 strikeouts in 125 innings entering Monday.
