Annabelle Copeland | Soccer
Copeland, a sophomore forward for the Marquette Catholic Explorers, gave them a shot in the arm on May 16 in the Class 1A Civic Memorial Regional finals against the host Eagles.
Copeland, in her first game back since suffering a broken nose on April 28, provided one goal in the 4-0 win over CM. It secured Marquette’s 11th straight regional crown.
Entering this week, Copeland had four goals and three assists on the season to give her 11 points.
Upon her return in the regional final Explorers’ head coach Steve Mitchell said, “She’s just huge, a great player. She adds another dimension to the game. When she’s not in there it’s like we’re losing something. To have her back not only boosts the team, but as a coach it takes a little pressure off of me as well.”
Katie Mans | Track and Field
Mans, just a freshman for the Alton Redbird girls’ track and field program, has been a incredible addition to the team.
Earlier in the season Mans set the new school record in the high jump and then on May 15 she had her biggest moment for the Redbirds to date — earning a spot in the Class 3A state meet.
Mans went 5-foot-5 in the high jump to win the Class 3A O’Fallon Sectional championship. She joins fellow Birds LaJarvia Brown (triple jump, long jump and 300-meter hurdles) and Jewel Wagner (shot put) as state qualifiers for Friday and Saturday’s Class 3A state meet at Eastern Illinois’ O’Brien Stadium in Charleston.
Mans competed in state competition in middle school but is stoked for the opportunity at the prep level.
“I like (high school) a lot better,” Mans said. “The competition is harder, which makes me go faster and jump higher.”
