Track & Field | LaJarvia Brown
Brown, a junior track and field standout for Alton High School, successfully defended her Class 3A state championship in the triple jump in Charleston.
Brown went 41 feet, 2 inches to win state gold. She also finished fifth in the 300-meter hurdles and sixth in the long jump at state.
Brown became the first female state champion for the Redbirds a year ago and now becomes only the third track athlete at AHS, boys or girls, to win consecutive titles in the same event and the first to win three individual medals in the same year. With the addition of Katie Mans’ eighth-place finish in the high jump at state and Jewel Wagner’s sixth in the shot put, the Birds finished eighth in the state as a team, too. It’s the best team finish in the history of the program.
Soccer | Lauren Schmickley
Schmickley, a junior for the Marquette Catholic Explorers’ girls’ soccer program, helped propel the Explorers into the Class 1A Springfield Super Sectional by scoring the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win over Gibault in the Columbia Sectional finals on May 22.
Schmickley accepted a crossing pass from teammate Adriana Schindler in the second overtime against Gibault and buried a one-timer along the left post.
Entering this week Schmickley had seven goals and three assists for 17 points. She’s third on the team in goals scored. Her goal on May 22 was her third game-winning tally this season, tying her with teammate Annabelle Copeland to lead the Explorers.
Schmickley and Marquette made their third straight appearance in a super sectional on Tuesday and lost to Rochester 2-1.
