Track: Matt Hartnett of Roxana
The 6-foot-5 senior, who showed his basketball talents courtside for the Shells the past winter, is achieving in track and field this spring.
Hartnett may have had his best meet of the season last week in the Springfield Southeast Sectional Class 2A at Memorial Stadium. He soared 43 feet, 8 inches to finish first in the triple jump.
This week, Hartnett will participate in the three-class IHSA finals at Charleston’s Eastern Illinois University. Class 2A competition starts Friday and concludes Saturday in O’Brien Stadium. In last month’s Madison County Meet, Hartnett won three times (triple jump, high jump and 400-meters).
“Matt competed in track as a sophomore, but not last season when he played baseball,” Shells’ coach Julie Akal said. “So we are thrilled to have him back.”
Soccer: Kate Sanfilippo of Marquette Catholic
It was a busy week for the junior midfielder, as she helped the Explorers capture a sectional championship.
She had an assist on one of Caroline Hoefert’s two goals in Marquette’s 2-0 semifinal victory over Waterloo Gibault in the Columbia Class 2A Sectional.
Then in Friday’s 3-2 sectional championship win over the host Eagles, Sanfilippo punched home a goal and converted a penalty kick as the Explorers prevailed in the overtime thriller. Marquette made four penalty kicks, one more than Columbia, and thus advances to the Metro East Lutheran Super-Sectional.
Sanfilippo had eight goals and 15 assists going into the Explorers’ super-sectional match. She was second in scoring to Hoefert. Marquette saw its season end at 18-6-1 after a 2-1 loss to Rochester on Tuesday.
