Megan Wittich | Softball
After working as the ace pitcher for the Marquette Catholic Explorers last season, Wittich’s role with the team has changed in her senior year. With the emergence of freshman hurler Meghan Schorman, Wittich has moved to the outfield for much of her playing time and continued to be a force in Marquette’s batting order.
She showed off her skills May 2 in Edwardsville, blasting a walkoff two-run home run to cap a monster seven-run seventh inning against Peoria Notre Dame in a comeback 9-7 victory.
“It’s the biggest home run I’ve hit in my career,” said Wittich, 3-for-4 against the Irish. “I’ve never hit a game-winning one like that. All I was looking to do was to get on base.”
Emma Lucas | Soccer
Lucas, a freshman midfielder for the Roxana Shells, compiled a mammoth week for the week of April 27.
In three wins during the week for the Shells, Lucas buried eight goals, including two hat tricks, the most notable in a 3-0 win over the rival East Alton-Wood River Oilers on April 28.
Entering this week, Lucas was directing the offense for Roxana on the season with 21 goals and seven assists for a whopping 49 points.
Her stellar play has helped the Shells rack up wins. Entering this week they were on a four-game winning streak.
“She always delivers,” Roxana head coach Lori Yates said. “She’s our leading scorer. If you watch her play, you know why she’s a top scorer. I can always count on her when she gets the ball; she’ll put it to the net. If she’d make more shots, I believe her numbers would be considerably higher.
“She’s also really good at controlling the field. She has a bright future.”
