Bailey McGuire and Josh Lovings
Bailey McGuire: Volleyball
McGuire, a 5-foot-10 senior outside hitter for the Roxana Shells, is having another stellar season for her 16-9 squad.
McGuire garnered MVP honors at the Morrisonville Tournament last weekend, helping to lead the Shells to second place in the tournament.
The 2013 Volleyball Player of the Year for AdVantage News is back this season after recovering from surgery following a horrific car accident last year.
She helped Roxana to a team-record 24 wins last year and the program’s first regional title in 10 years. Now McGuire is helping lead the Shells as they head toward the Class 3A Civic Memorial Regional beginning the week of Oct. 27. Seeds for regionals were released after press time on www.ihsa.org on Oct. 9.
Josh Lovings: Football
Lovings made the signature play in a signature win for the Alton Redbirds in Week 6.
Alton defeated Belleville East 17-14 on the road to improve to 4-2 and 2-2, but it was Lovings’ defensive play on a fourth-and-8 near the Lancer goal line in the fourth quarter that sealed it. East’s Donte’ Walker was wide open, racing for the end zone and looking to make a catch when Lovings closed the gap and made a game-saving hit to separate Walker from the ball.
Conversely, Lovings made the big play on offense in the third quarter, running a reversal for a 10-yard touchdown run for what turned out to be the game-winning score.
Lovings drastically helped Alton’s playoff chances, as one more win could find the Birds in the postseason for the first time since 2006.
