Zack Moore and Janelle Wilson
Zack Moore | Golf
Moore, a senior linkster for the Roxana Shells, achieved a first in his prep golf career on Tuesday.
The Shells golfer carded a 79 at the Class 2A Waterloo Sectional at Acorns Golf Links in Waterloo to garner a berth at the state tournament on Friday and Saturday at Weibring Golf Course at Illinois State University in Normal.
Moore shot a 37 on the front and a 42 on the back in ugly weather conditions at the Acorns. It was raining, windy and cold throughout the day.
Moore will be the lone representative for Roxana and the River Bend area at the Class 2A state tournament.
“My sophomore year I got close,” he said. “I shot the number, went to a playoff hole and the kid sank a huge putt for birdie and he won. Last year I blew up on the last couple holes, so this year I needed to make it and I’m glad I did.”
Janelle Wilson | Tennis
A senior netter for the Alton Redbirds, Wilson put together a huge week in singles action.
Wilson picked up a trio of signature wins during the week for the Redbirds, starting with a victory over Belleville West’s Kayleigh Thurwalker 6-0, 6-1 on Oct. 8 in dual action. She followed it up with a 4-6, 6-3, 10-5 over Thurwalker and a 6-3, 6-2 win over Edwardsville’s Callaghan Adams on Saturday at West to become the Southwestern Conference champion at No. 1 singles.
Wilson will now try to bottle that success in the Edwardsville Sectional on Friday and Saturday and earn a berth at the state tournament.
“It was definitely a good week,” Wilson said. “A lot better than it has been.
“It’s nice. Yeah, I wanted to win.”
