Jones, just a freshman for the Marquette Catholic girls’ tennis squad, is headed to the state tournament.
Jones finished fourth in the Edwardsville Sectional to earn her spot at the state tournament in her first prep season.
Jones bested Roxana’s Haley Milazzo 6-2, 6-1 and then Highland’s Melanie Wick 6-2, 6-1 to punch her ticket to state. She lost 6-1, 6-0 to Edwardsville’s Callaghan Adams and 6-3, 6-0 to Morgan Colbert of the Tigers in Saturday’s action.
The three-day state tournament began on Thursday in Chicagoland and will conclude on Saturday. Jones is the lone representative for the Explorers in 2014.

Civic Memorial’s Brayton Williams produced an offensive explosion in Week 8 vs. Mississippi Valley Conference rival Jersey.
Williams rushed for a career-high four touchdowns in a 41-28 win over the Panthers. He rumbled in from 1, 20, 8 and 6 yards. Altogether he carried the ball 12 times for 63 yards, while also supplying an interception on defense.
Williams’ efforts snapped a five-game skid for CM, which also picked up its first MVC victory.
“It’s the biggest game I’ve ever had,” the 6-foot, 170-pound senior said after supplying the production in a Senior Night win for the Eagles.
CM trailed 20-7 in the game before reeling off 34 straight points to mount its comeback victory.
