Male Athlete of the Week
Brandon Critchfield of Jersey
Critchfield, a talented sophomore, completed a successful season by saving his best for last.
He finished fourth in the 120-pound class during the Class 2A IHSA finals at the University of Illinois’ State Farm Center in Champaign. Critchfield had to come through wrestlebacks to achieve his feat.
Critchfield prevailed in the quarterfinals and semifinals before bowing to Lenny Peterson of Crystal Lake Central in the third-place match. Critchfield, who also won a wrestleback on Friday after falling Thursday in his opening bout, concluded his season with a 36-11 record.
And his fourth-place finish in the state finals is the highest for any Jersey High grappler. He is the first Panther to medal. Critchfield took third in the Mascoutah Regional and claimed fourth in the Chatham Glenwood Sectional. Critchfield was the lone Jersey matman to get through the sectional and advance to state.
