Golf | Drew Sobol
Sobol, an East Alton-Wood River High junior, started his season on a high note Aug. 17 as he carded a 5-under par 67 to finish first during the Hickory Stick Invitational at the Belk Park Course in Wood River.
Sobol posted rounds of 34 and 33 to easily win the competition among players from 14 schools. It was the lowest round he has shot in a tournament at Belk, his home course.
And Sobol finished six strokes ahead of Marquette’s Michael Holtz and Palmyra Northwestern’s Tyler Woods, who shared second place with rounds of 73.
“It was pretty exciting for Drew because he didn’t miss a putt or have a bogey on the course,” said dad Dave Sobol, the EA-WR golf coach.
Drew was happy with his effort and figures it could lead to bigger and better things this season. EA-WR is competing in Class 2A for IHSA boys’ golf.
Golf | Sara Gwillim
Gwillim, a senior at Civic Memorial High, made her mark again in the Madison County tourney on Aug. 18.
The high-flying Eagle shot a 3-over par score to finish first in the small-school competition for the second consecutive year. She took second overall to Edwardsville’s Kayla Weinacht, who carded a 1-over par.
Golfers got to play only nine holes since rain washed out the final nine holes. So each player counted the first nine holes she played.
It was a successful outing for Gwillim, who started the season with a win. She is cast as the leader of a young CM squad.
“What I want to do is teach a lot of the younger girls how to manage the golf course,” Gwillim said. “My goal is to finally make it to state and then I want to go on and play college golf and major in sports business management.”
CM coach Jane Middleton said of Gwillim: “Sara has been driving it far and putting it well.”
