Golf | Michael Holtz
Holtz is a junior for the Marquette Explorers’ boys’ golf program. He went on a tear to open the 2015 season.
Holtz fired a 71 to earn medalist honors for the second consecutive season at the Madison County Tournament at Gateway National Golf Links in Madison Aug. 20. His stellar day individually helped lead the Explorers to the overall team title with a 308, outdistancing large-school powerhouse Edwardsville.
Holtz’s efforts at the MadCo came on the heels of him carding a 73 at the Hickory Stick Invitational at Belk Park Aug. 17. That score was good enough to tie him for second and help lead Marquette to the team title there.
“I hit a lot of fairways today, so that really helped me,” Holtz said at the MadCo.
Soccer | Dylan Klunk
A freshman for the Roxana Shells, Klunk began his prep career with a bang Aug. 24.
A forward for the Roxana booters, Klunk tickled the twine with a penalty kick to slingshot the Shells past the rival Civic Memorial Eagles 1-0 in both teams’ season opener.
“It was a lot of pressure, but he came in and did it, so I’m proud of him,” Roxana head coach Steve Dohnal said.
After the game went scoreless through regulation and was tied 4-4 after a first round of penalty kicks, it went to a sudden death. Klunk provided the hammer for the Shells, scoring the only PK in the sudden-death round, giving them a 5-4 advantage in PKs and a 1-0 victory.
“I’m proud of how I redeemed myself,” Klunk said of the goal.
