Matthew Daniel | Swimming
Daniel has had a stellar season in the swimming pool this summer and maybe his best came on July 26 at the U.S. Swimming Ozarks Long Course Swim Championships at the Chuck Fruit Aquatic Center in Edwardsville.
Daniel was the high point winner in the 15-and-over division, winning five of his seven events and finishing second in his other two for the Tri City Tidalwaves.
Daniel won the 100-meter freestyle in 54.58, the 200 free in 2:01.23, the 400 free in 4:17.06, the 800 free in 8:51.09 and the 200-meter butterfly in 2:11.98. He was second in the 50 free in 25.13 and the 100 butterfly in 59.50.
The sophomore-to-be at Alton High School was also key to the Summers-Port Sharks winning their 23rd straight Southwestern Illinois Swim Association (SWISA) Championships.
“You can really see the fruit of his labors now that he’s stepping into the senior ranks,” Tidalwaves and Sharks’ coach Nancy Miller said of Daniel.
Johnathan Braswell | Golf
Braswell, a 2006 graduate of Roxana High School, was the champion of the 62nd Gold Medal Tournament Aug. 2 at Rock Spring Golf Course.
The 27-year-old fired a 3-over par 143 in the two-day tournament. It was his stellar performance on the first day that held up to earn him the championship. Braswell carded a sizzling 1-under par 69 Aug. 1 in the tourney.
“I’ve been close here and in the Godfrey Open, but this is the first time I’ve won a tournament,” said Braswell, who spent the first three years of high school at Bethel Christian Academy in South Roxana.
Braswell staved off second-place finishers Jack McKinney and Jim Odle by one stroke in the championship flight to corral the tournament championship.
“Sometimes I don’t get to play too much, but the timing was right for this tournament,” Braswell said.
