Kotzamanis, 12, of the Tri-City Alton YMCA enjoyed an excellent weekend July 10-12 in the Independence Celebration Invitational at the Chuck Fruit Aquatic Center inside the District 7 Sports Complex in Edwardsville.
Kotzamanis secured championships in five events in the girls’ 11-12 division. She won the 200-meter IM in 2 minutes, 34.25 seconds; the 50-meter freestyle in 28.55 seconds, the 100-meter freestyle in 1:01.47, the 200-meter freestyle in 2:15.20 and the 100-meter backstroke in 1:09.89 seconds.
Kotzamanis accounted for all the wins in the meet for the TCAY.
As a team the Tidalwaves finished 12th in the 16-team event. Flyers Aquatic of St. Louis won the meet with a total of 3,607 points.
Baseball | Ben Cusac
Cusac, a recent Alton High School graduate, joined the Metro East Bears after the start of their summer season and turned in his best performance July 12 against Fairview Heights.
The right-handed pitcher tossed a complete game in a 4-1 Metro East win, helping the Bears secure the No. 1 seed in the District 22 playoffs, which began Tuesday.
After dropping the first game of a doubleheader in extra innings to Fairview Heights, Cusac was the shot in the arm the Bears needed to lock down the top spot. He went seven innings, scattering seven hits, fanning six and walking one while only allowing one run. Entering the District 22 playoffs, Metro East owned an 18-6 overall record and went 6-2 in district play during the season.
