Randy Skiff | Baseball
Skiff, a recent Roxana High School graduate, is playing for the Roxana American Legion baseball team this summer. The Roxana Senior Legion squad entered Monday on a torrid start, posting a 9-1 record. Skiff was a major factor in Roxana’s success on June 13 in the Trenton Round Robin Tournament. Roxana won the round-robin affair by beating Steeleville 6-5 and then Trenton 6-0. The win over Steeleville was a come-from-behind barn burner. Trailing 5-0, Roxana plated one run in the sixth and five in the seventh, including a walk-off RBI hit by Skiff. For the game Skiff was 3 for 4 with a double, RBI and two runs scored. In the win over Trenton Skiff stirred the offense again, going 2 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs.
LaJarvia Brown | Track and Field
A junior for the Alton Redbirds, Brown made the trek to the AAU Midwest Nationals in Las Cruces, N.M., home of New Mexico State the weekend of June 6-7. The two-time Class 3A IHSA state champion in the triple jump, Brown leaped 41 feet, 6.75 inches to win the triple jump in New Mexico. That was a personal record for Brown, which bested her Illinois state record of 41-6.25. Brown went 18-7 to finish fifth in the long jump as an individual, too. She also nabbed third in the heptathlon, which includes seven events. Her events and times/distances in the heptathlon were: shot put (29-2), 100-meter high hurdles (15.33 seconds), 200-meters (25.79), javelin (74-8), 800-meters (2:30.0), high jump (5-3.5) and long jump (19-2.5).
