Jacob Skrabacz | Baseball
Skrabacz, the senior second baseman for the Alton Redbirds, lived up to his nickname of “Scrappy” in a 4-3 come-from-behind win over Quincy on May 28.
The 5-foot-9, 160-pound infielder and No. 9 hitter for Alton hit a two-run walkoff single to propel the Birds past the Blue Devils in the opening round of the Class 4A Edwardsville Regional.
His hit capped a four-run seventh inning for AHS, which was started by a home run from catcher Aaron Bonnell. The Birds didn’t record an out in the inning on the way to their valiant comeback.
Entering Monday, Skrabacz was hitting .306 with a .485 on base percentage and 18 RBIs, while playing a solid second base for the Redbirds.
Max Goepel | Baseball
Goepel, a senior right-handed pitcher for the Marquette Catholic Explorers, enjoyed a great Memorial Day performance on the mound against the Triad Knights.
Goepel was efficient in a 2-0 win over Triad that took 1 hour and 26 minutes on May 25 at Gordon Moore Park to open the Class 3A Jersey Regional.
Goepel went the distance in the win, tossing all seven innings while fanning four, walking two, hitting a pair of batters and scattering three hits.
The Explorers advanced to play host and No. 1 seed Jersey in the next regional game, unfortunately losing 6-5 to end their season at 18-12.
Goepel relieved John Hughes and suffered the loss vs. the Panthers. He went 9-3 with a 1.70 ERA in 74 innings on the season.
