Ice Hockey | Cole Ford
Ford, a senior for the East Alton-Wood River ice hockey team, earns the AdVantage News Athlete of the Week after leading the Oilers past the Alton Redbirds 6-3 on Nov. 17 at the East Alton Ice Arena.
It was the first win for the struggling Oilers. Ford, last year’s AdVantage News co-Hockey Player of the Year, logged a hat trick and chipped in with an assist for good measure. His empty net goal in the final minute secured his hat trick.
“That’s the first win for an Oiler team against Alton in a really long time,” EA-WR assistant coach Pat St. Peters said. “That was sweet.”
EA-WR fired 39 shots on goal in the victory over the Redbirds.
Basketball | Hannah Rexford
A sophomore for the Roxana Shells, Rexford showed she could be an offensive force for the Shells this season during the Dupo Cat Classic.
Rexford led Roxana to victory in its final game of the tournament, securing third place for the Shells. She poured in a team-high 13 points in a commanding 51-25 triumph over Valmeyer. She had 7 points in the 38-28 semifinal loss to host Dupo, good for second best on Roxana.
The Shells came out of the season-opening tournament with a 2-1 record and began this week with a game at South Central Conference rival Greenville on Monday.
Rexford averaged 6.6 points per game as a freshman, third best on the squad.
