Soccer | Collin Dunn
Dunn, a senior defenseman for the Marquette Catholic Explorers, helped seal a signature win for their 2015 season on Oct. 27 in Columbia.
Dunn’s goal in the 52nd minute of the Class 2A Columbia Sectional semifinals against the highly touted host Eagles was enough to put Marquette over the top in a 2-1 win.
A free kick was earned by the Explorers at midfield and Dunn just let it fly. On the wet night, it hit the turf, skipped over the goalie’s head and raced into the net for the game-winning goal.
“It was a free kick at midfield and I just kicked it as far as I could,” Dunn said.
It was a redeeming moment for Marquette, which lost 6-1 to Columbia late in the regular season. Unfortunately, the Explorers lost 7-0 to Waterloo in the sectional finale, ending their season at 14-7-3.
Football | Brett Lane
A senior wide receiver for the Civic Memorial Eagles, Lane did what he could in a 34-14 loss to the Mater Dei Knights in the opening round of the Class 4A football playoffs on Oct. 31 at Hauser Field.
Lane hauled in 4 passes for a team-high 104 yards on a wet and nasty day in Bethalto.
Lane had 30 receptions for 466 yards and 6 touchdowns on the season for the Eagles, who finished 7-3, their first winning season since 2005. His 6 TDs were a team-high for the receiving corps.
CM’s stellar season earned them a third-place finish in the Mississippi Valley Conference this season and its first home playoff game since 2005.
