Cross Country | Haley Kerpan
Kerpan is having a solid senior season for the East Alton-Wood River Oilers’ cross country program.
On Oct. 6 the senior runner enjoyed the highlight of her season, winning the small-school title of the Madison County Meet at SIUE.
Kerpan turned in a time of 20 minutes, 12.04 seconds to earn her championship. Her time was not only good for the small-school crown, but it was the second-best time in the entire race. Abigail Richter of Triad won the large-school title and was first overall with a time of 19:46.53.
“It’s kind of a result of all of my hard work,” Kerpan said following the MadCo race. “I’m really proud to say that I got it.”
Football | Asa Collins
Collins, a senior running back/defensive lineman for the Alton Redbirds, enjoyed some twofold excitement on Oct. 9 at Public School Stadium in Alton.
Collins rumbled in for three touchdowns on the ground on 17 carries for 135 yards. He also added 2.5 sacks on four solo and three assisted tackles on defense. It was a great night statistically for Collins, but even more importantly, it guided the Birds to their first win of the season, beating Granite City 42-14.
Alton is now 1-6 and 1-4 in the Southwestern Conference with the win.
“It feels awesome,” Collins said. “I like this feeling. I want to feel this for the next two weeks, honestly.”
For the season, Collins has 454 yards rushing and seven TDs, while producing 48 total tackles and four sacks on defense.
