Jesse Simmons | Football
A senior wide receiver for Marquette Catholic, Simmons had a heck of a day in Week 5’s 38-6 victory over East Alton-Wood River at Public School Stadium Sept. 26.
Simmons hauled in eight catches for 106 yards and a pair of touchdowns from quarterback Trey Aguirre. He snagged TD catches of 30 and 32 yards in the Prairie State Conference win, lifting the Explorers to 3-2 overall on the season and 3-0 in league play.
Simmons said of the game, “It’s probably the best game I’ve had. When their (Oilers’) defense came up on me, I went deep and when they laid off me, I took a short route.”
Marquette is back in action at Pawnee at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Jordan Hawkins | Football
Hawkins is a stout 6-foot-2, 200-pound sophomore for Roxana, whose recent switch from offensive line to fullback has been very fruitful for the Shells.
Hawkins moved to fullback in Week 3 and it has coincided with Roxana’s current three-game winning streak. In Week 5 at Charlie Raich Field on Sept. 25 in a 49-36 win over Greenville, Hawkins had a huge game.
He rushed it 24 times for a team-high 143 yards on the ground and punched in a touchdown. He was one of three running backs to go more than 100 yards in the Shells’ potent rushing attack, being joined by Blake Vandiver and Jarod Foiles.
Since shifting into the backfield, Hawkins has 56 carries for 397 yards and a pair of scores overall.
Roxana is at Litchfield for Week 6 at 7 p.m. tonight.
