Gwillim, a senior for the Civic Memorial girls’ golf team, turned in the best finish in the program’s history on Oct. 17.
Gwillim finished in a three-way tie for 10th place at Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur at the Class A state tournament. The finish earned her all-state honors and made her the first state medalist in CM’s history for girls’ golf.
Gwillim shot 82 on Friday and 83 on Saturday for total score of 165. It was a very consistent weekend for the senior linkster, who posted 18 pars over her 36 holes.
Gwillim was just two strokes off of eighth place at state.
She had the fifth qualifying score from individuals on non-advancing teams at the Class A Carterville Sectional with an 83 and the second-highest score for a player from a non-advancing team at the Roxana Regional with an 80.
Tennis | Shelby Jones
For the second straight season, Jones will represent the Marquette Catholic Explorers at the girls’ tennis state tournament.
The sophomore turned in a third-place finish at the Alton Sectional on Oct. 17. The top four spots in singles and doubles qualify for the state tournament, which began Thursday and concludes Saturday in Chicagoland.
Jones defeated Roxana’s Sydney Owsley 2-6, 7-6, 6-2 to nab her third-place finish in sectional action.
Overall she went 3-1 in the tournament, her only loss coming to Edwardsville’s Natalie Karibian 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals.
Jones sports a 13-10 record on the season. She looks to build on her 1-2 mark at state as a freshman.
