Natalie Long and Trey Aguirre
Football: Trey Aguirre
Aguirre, the 5-foot-10, 160-pound junior quarterback of the Marquette Catholic Explorers, was a key cog in the team’s 44-0 Prairie State Conference victory over East Alton-Wood River in Week 5.
Aguirre was 5 of 18 under center for 150 yards, throwing for three touchdowns and running for two more.
Four of his TDs came in the first half, as the Explorers led the Oilers 37-0 at halftime.
His rushing TDs came on runs of three yards and 25 yards. Two of his passing TDs were to senior Danny Holtz on 11 and 27-yard strikes, while the other went to Harvey Howell on a 35-yard hookup in the third quarter.
“I’d say it was one of my better games,” Aguirre said.
Aguirre now leads Marquette in a crucial PSC showdown with Pawnee at 7 p.m. Friday at Public School Stadium. The Explorers (2-3, 2-1) need a win over the Indians (4-1, 3-0) for a shot at a share of the conference title.
Golf: Natalie Long
Long, a senior lady linkster for the Alton Redbirds, produced her best day ever on the links Tuesday at Belk Park Golf Course. Long fired a 1-over par 73 at Belk to earn medalist honors at the Southwestern Conference Tournament.
Long’s afternoon helped lead the Redbirds to shoot a 305 and win the conference tournament, garnering a share of the league title with the Edwardsville Tigers.
“I shot a 77 at Woodlands a few weeks ago, so this is my best,” Long said of her round of 18. “It’s real exciting. It’s awesome.”
She added, “My short game was really good today. That was really helping me.”
Long will be a key cog when Alton travels to Lincoln Greens Golf Course in Springfield for the Class AA Springfield Regional on Oct. 8.
