Volleyball | Annie Evans
Evans, a junior and 5-foot-8 middle hitter for the Alton Redbirds, earned MVP honors of the Redbird Classic girls’ volleyball tournament Sept. 5 at AHS.
The Redbirds went 5-0 in the tourney to cruise to the title for the second year in a row, and Evans was a huge contributor in that run. She’s helped the Birds race out to a 7-1 record overall entering Southwestern Conference play on Wednesday with Belleville East.
Evans had 21 service points, 25 kills, nine blocks, two aces and an assist in the Redbird Classic. Her 13 service points in the final game with Orchard Farm were huge in the tight three-game victory.
Through Tuesday, she was tied for second at AHS with 36 kills and led the team with 15 blocks.
Football | David Lane
Lane, a 6-foot-1, 170-pound junior wide receiver for the Civic Memorial Eagles, had a doozy of a day in Week 2.
Lane grabbed four balls for 116 yards and two touchdowns in the win. The second TD was an 80-yard strike, which came in the last 50 seconds of the game in Mattoon and helped secure the victory and run the Eagles to 2-0 on the season.
Lane had a team-high 54 yards on two catches in Week 1’s 50-21 win over Marquette Catholic with a touchdown.
For the season, Lane has six catches for 170 yards and three TDs and is building an outstanding rapport with senior quarterback Adam Hill, who has 428 yards passing and six TDs on the season.
CM has its season opener on Friday, welcoming Effingham to Bethalto for Week 3 action.
