Bower, a senior forward for the Alton Redbirds, was second on the team in scoring through Wednesday of this week with five goals. Four of them came in the week of Sept. 14 to earn him AdVantage News Athlete of the Week.
Bower tallied a hat trick in Alton’s first Southwestern Conference win of the season, a 6-1 romp of Belleville East on Sept. 8. He also tallied a goal in a commanding 6-0 win over local rival Civic Memorial on Sept. 19 at Gordon Moore Park.
Bower scored on a header and a close-range goal in the first half vs. the Lancers on Sept. 8 and tacked on a second-half tally to complete his hat trick.
“He’s a quick kid,” Alton coach Jay Robertson said. “He’s working on moving in space off of the ball.”
Blake Vandiver | Football
Roxana’s Vandiver, a senior running back, helped get the Shells in the win column in Week 3.
The Shells improved to 1-2 on the young season as they traveled to Hillsboro Sept. 11 and defeated the Hiltoppers 34-7.
Vandiver got going in the ground game in the victory, rushing for 117 yards on 12 carries and two touchdowns. He also added 20 yards in receiving and another TD, along with a two-point conversion.
Through three weeks on the season now, Vandiver has 36 carries for 265 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Through the air, he’s caught nine balls for 74 yards and two scores.
The 1-2 Shells are on the road at Vandalia in Week 4.
