Female Athlete of the Week, Lindsey Fencel, of Civic Memorial High School, Soccer
During the winter season, the senior guard shined for the Eagles basketball team that went 31-3. Fencel established school career records in steals and assists. Now, she’s shining for them in soccer, which is her top sport. The 5-foot-8 Fencel is taking her talents to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville this fall. Fencel has scored 23 goals and has 15 assists for a total of 61 points in 15 matches. Those totals are tops among Southwestern Illinois scorers and second-best in the St. Louis area. It’s no wonder the Eagles were 10-5 after those matches and hoping to contend in the Mississippi Valley Conference, where Triad figures to be the team to beat. CM, 2-4 in the Valley, has four league dates remaining.
Male Athlete of the Week, Nelson Martz of Roxana High School, Baseball
The senior continues to boost the 9-10 Shells, both with his pitching and hitting. Martz was batting a torrid .510 through those first 19 games and he owns 21 RBIs, second-best on the team. When he’s not pitching, you can usually find him at third base. On the mound, Martz serves as the ace for the Shells. He was 3-1 with a 1.24 ERA, a no-hitter and two shutouts to his credit this spring. Martz, the son of Lewis and Clark Community College baseball coach Randy Martz, has 56 strikeouts in nearly 40 innings of work. The Shells, members of the South Central Conference, are slated to play Monday at Carlinville. They will entertain Marquette Catholic on Wednesday in a nonconference game.
