The Granite City Warriors 15 and under baseball team won the St. Louis Amateur Baseball Association consolation championship on Wednesday.
The Granite City Warriors 15-and-under team cruised to a consolation championship in the St. Louis Amateur Baseball Association playoff tournament on Wednesday.
The Warriors finished with a 4-0 record in the eight-team consolation tournament. Granite City was the No. 1 seed in the bracket.
The Warriors started tournament play on July 16 by beating the American National Eagles 3-0 in the first round at Waterloo. They beat the Easton St. Louis Tigers 7-2 on July 17 at Blazier Field in O’Fallon and Mascoutah 9-3 on July 18 at Waterloo.
Granite City beat the Tigers again on Wednesday, a 4-3 victory in the winner’s bracket final at O’Fallon that clinched the Warriors the tournament championship.
Making up the Granite City 15-and-under team are Freddie Edwards, Aaron Gibson, Bennett Smallie, Brennan Haddix, Francisco Figueroa, Tyler McCauley, Clayton Miller, Jacob Woods, Troy Shrum, Cameron Hibbetts, Nicholas Singleton, Devin Shemwell, Nolan Briagas, Pavol Hutchins, Logan Gordon, James Grote and Cade Bartling. The coaches are Jeff Bladdick and Scott Smallie.
Haddix, Edwards, Bartling, Smallie and McCauley will represent the Warriors in the SLABA 15-and-under all-star game at 12 p.m. Sunday at Car Shield Field in O’Fallon, Mo. Haddix will be the starting second baseman, Smallie and McCauley are the reserves and Edwards and Bartling are the pitchers. The Warriors finished their season at 13-6.
The Granite City 17-and-under team finished 0-2 in the consolation bracket. The Warriors lost to the top-seeded South-West Stars 7-2 on July 16 and O’Fallon Blue 2-1 the following day, both games were played at O’Fallon. They finished their season at 3-15.
Pitcher Tyler Wheatley, second baseman Hunter Needham and outfielder Carter Macklin will represent the Warriors at the SLABA 17-and-under All-Star Game at 6 p.m. Sunday.
