Alton High grad and former basketball standout De'Antae McMurray officially signed with the Drake Bulldogs of the Missouri Valley Conference on Wednesday.
McMurray played three seasons at Marquette Catholic before playing his senior year with the Redbirds. He's just finished up two successful seasons playing at Southwestern Illinois College in Belleville.
T.J. Thomas of Stone Mountain, Ga. also signed with Drake on Wednesday.
“We are thrilled with the addition of these two players,” Drake coach Ray Giacoletti said. “De’Antae and T.J. will impact our program from day one. They are both high character student-athletes who are hungry to help our team take big steps forward this coming season.”
McMurray is a 6-2, 170-pound, point guard that has spent the past two seasons at SWIC. As a sophomore, he averaged 11.5 points, 5.1 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game to lead the team to a 27-6 record.
SWIC also captured a conference and regional title with McMurray earning all-conference and all-region honors during both seasons. While at SWIC, McMurray played for 35-year veteran and NJCAA Hall of Fame coach Jay Harrington.
“De’Antae brings experience and success at the point guard position,” Giacoletti said. “He played a huge role in helping his team achieve great success the past two years in a very competitive league. De’Antae possesses a good feel and ability in getting his teammates involved on the offensive end as well as being very capable of contributing himself.”
McMurray also played AAU basketball with the Southwestern Illinois Jets with current Bulldog player C.J. Rivers. Rivers is a graduate of Cahokia.
McMurray and Thomas join 11 returning players from the 2015-16 season at Drake, including six that served in starting roles.
