Southwestern 5, Greenville 3 – Scoring a key South Central Conference victory, the Southwestern Piasa Birds reached the 20-win plateau at 20-11. They are 6-2 in the SCC and in the thick of the chase for the conference championship.
Litchfield, which is 7-2 in the SCC, clinched a tie for the league title by defeating Carlinville, 13-2. Southwestern and Greenville are both 6-2 and each team has one SCC game remaining. Roxana is 5-2 with two games left The Piasa Birds meet Vandalia on Friday. The Shells have to play Greenville and Vandalia.
Southwestern's Spencer Heineman improved to 9-1 by pitching a six-hitter, allowing two earned runs, striking out seven and walking none. He backed his cause by going 3-for-4.
Teammate Blake Lawson was 2-for-3 with a double and Jimmie Naylor batted in two runs. Southwestern used a four-run fourth to overturn a 2-0 deficit and Heineman limited the Comets to one run the rest of the way.
Freeburg 7, Marquette Catholic 2 – Host Freeburg scored three runs in the third and tallied three more times in the fourth for a win over the 18-10 Explorers.
Marquette has lost three in a row after stringing together an 11-game winning streak.
Kile Bailey collected two hits and a pair of RBIs for the Midgets. Keegan Baxmeyer had three hits. Freeburg had 11 hits in all and took advantage of two Explorers’ errors. Milton Pinkston hurled a complete game for the victory.
