The Metro East Bears opened play in the Fifth Division Tournament in style on Tuesday in Carmi.
The Bears defeated Harrisburg 9-7 behind an eighth-inning two-run home run from Maverick McSparin to break a tie.
The wild win saw Metro East improve to 22-6. The Bears now face Murphysboro at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the winner's bracket.
McSparin was not the only Metro East player to go deep on the short porch at Eckerle Park though. Aaron Jackson helped the cause by walloping a grand slam in the fourth inning. Anthony Kindle was the only Bear with multiple hits in the game, logging two.
Jackson had a total of five RBIs in the win. Nick Paulda and Kory Loew also had hits in Metro East's six-hit performance. The Bears were outhit 12-6 by Harrisburg in the game.
Drake Hampton got the win in relief of Jacob St. Peters who worked seven innings. Hampton tossed 1.2 innings, surrendering one hit, two walks and striking out one.
