HIGHLAND – The Metro East Bears got back on the winning path Wednesday. They prowled along that trail for a 5-0 Senior Legion victory over host Highland in a District 22 baseball game at Glik Park.
Metro East, which lost to West O’Fallon, Mo., 4-2 on Saturday in the Washington Tournament, has won seven of its last eight games. The Bears improved to 10-4 and 4-1 in league play.
Highland, which has lost twice to Metro East this season, is 8-7 and 3-3.
Ray Bailey’s solid pitching sparked the Bears. He allowed just two hits and struck out five over six innings. Drew Curtis pitched the seventh.
Jordan Briggs’ two-run double keyed the Bears’ offense. They led 5-0 by the third inning and never looked back.
Metro East is scheduled to entertain league foe Smithton at 7:30 tonight on Hopkins Field. The Bears then welcome Festus, Mo., on Friday. They go to Smithton on Saturday and Troy on Sunday before playing host to Fairview Heights at 7:30 Monday.
Next weekend, the Bears will participate in their 15-team Firecracker Tournament. Games will be played July 4-6 at Moore Park, Longacre Park in Fairview Heights and Whitey Herzog Field in Belleville. Metro East is cast in five-team Pool A that also includes Jerseyville; Bryant, Ark.; St. Charles, Mo.; and Eureka, Mo.
The tourney championship game is set for 3:30 p.m. Sunday, July 6, at Fairview Heights.
